Greek Property Taxes

Anybody who reads a newspaper, or surfs on the net, will be aware that the Greek economy is at crisis point and that the incoming government has to slash the country’s spending, immediately. Amidst a raft of measures designed to cut spending, increase taxation, and tackle the endemic corruption that has fuelled the black economy and reduced tax receipts, PASOK has announced that it is to shift the burden of Greek annual property taxes.

As the scale of the Greek national debt becomes apparent, the need for money has fuelled an intense debate over Greek property taxes and the battle lines between Church and State have been drawn. The Church is the largest property owner in Greece and the government believes that it has enjoyed tax-exemption for long enough and that it should pay its dues. The Orthodox hierarchy, of course, have dug their feet in the sand and stated that they are simply going to refuse to pay the one off windfall tax.

As the new government attempts to make sense of the mess left by the outgoing administration, a belligerent Georges Papandreou laid down his vision for the future.
